The Poodle, known for its intelligence and distinctive curly coat, originated in Germany as a water retriever. The breed's name likely stems from the German word "pudel" or "pudelin," which means "to splash in water." Poodles were later standardized in France, where they became popular among nobility and circus performers for their trainability and versatility. Over time, they were bred in three sizes—Standard, Miniature, and Toy—each retaining the breed's characteristic elegance, intelligence, and friendly disposition.
At Virginia Poodles and Doodles we breed doodles so that other dog breeds inherit the health and hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle. This results in Goldendoodles that are as outgoing as Golden Retrievers but live longer and do not shed.
